SurSadhak – the best mobile app for practicing Indian Classical Music: Compose, Share & Listen

asterbyte November 5, 2021
Life is quite hectic these days, and we are on the go constantly. However, being busy doesn’t diminish our desire to stay connected with our culture and traditions. One of such traditions is Indian classical music. Often this music requires years of daily practice with the instrument of your choice, even your voice. Enter SurSadhak, a phone app that enables you to do this practice anywhere anytime. We let you fit in your daily practice in the free moments during the day, without requiring an extensive music setup.

SurSadhak is one of the best mobile applications for practicing Indian Classical music with built-in instruments like Tabla, Tanpura, Sur-Peti, Swar Mandal, and Manjira. The app is completely free and doesn’t even contain any ads. It allows you to compose your music with your favorite instruments. The only way to improve your singing level is through daily practice also called riyaaz.

Besides breathing exercises, humming, etc you should do vocal practice. But for that, we need to use realistic Tabla/Tanpura/similar accompaniments.  These instruments aren’t always affordable. Smartphone apps, like SurSadhak, provide a ready solution that is accessible anytime anywhere. You can take along your favorite instrument with you wherever you go. The application comes with so many amazing features for the users. Let’s have a look at them one by one.

  1. The main features are

    • Selection of Instruments. By selecting the instrument Tabla, the user would experience a realistic percussion sound of the tabla drums. The user can get the Taals (Ektaal, Teentaal, Dadra, etc)  of his choice from the list. He can also practice the Taal on different scales. There are 22 Taals available in the app. There is a short info section showing the details of each Taal.

    • Adjusting scales (A, A#, D, etc) from the Tuner Section. The user can fine-tune the scales very easily. Even the pitch can also be adjusted.

    • Changing the tempo is also another unique feature of SurSadhak. It allows the user to change the tempo (25-300bpm) for Tabla. The user can adjust the speed of the beat in detail using the up and down arrows.

  2. Selecting the Swar of Tanpura(i.e., Pa, Ma & Ni). The user can adjust the scales (depending on the Swar he has chosen) and volume control of Tanpura.

  3. Sur-Peti, Swar Mandal, and Manjira are the other three instruments available in Sursadhak. Users can only adjust the volume control of these instruments.

  4. The user can enable the play/pause button for Master Mixer.

Without affecting any of those features there are some new features added to SurSadhak’s updated version.

  1. SurSadhak now has an attractive UI design compared to its older version. You would get a great user-friendly experience.

  2. The Record button allows the user to compose music with available instruments in the app and then he can record it as well. It will be saved in SurSadhak’s My Recording section.

  3. There is another feature called Mic– for recording other instruments/external sounds instantly.

  4. By using google/Facebook id, users can compose songs in SurSadhak.

  5. Another feature is that users can add tracks to the song apart from Tabla and Tanpura. Users can add tracks in two ways – one is through recording and the other one is by uploading a file from their mobile phone. Also, users can add/view notes/lyrics along with the track.

  6. SurSadhak also allows you to share your song with others. You can also share it publicly with all other users.

  7. Users can listen to other users’ songs as well. They can give likes/comments on the songs. Another option is that users can keep their favorite songs on a separate list.

  8. Songs are displayed category-wise like popular songs, latest, etc. It makes it easier for the users to select songs from them.

  9. Users can make their profile in SurSadhak. The profile allows them to add a name, picture, and biography.

SurSadhak’s features help you practice songs with ease. Each feature supports your music composing ability to the next level. Even though there are other applications to learn Indian classical music, SurSadhak is an all-in-one app that creates a studio-like setting where you can practice and play percussion instruments offline. Some of the features like recording and listening take you to improve your vocal music. Briefly, SurSadhak gives you five instrumentalists’ jobs at one stretch. Start your vocal practice today with Sursadhak.

SurSadhak provides a community for those who practice Indian Classical music. It unites music lovers from all over the world. Users can compose songs and share them with others. Once you do, other users can comment on them and give their feedback. Also, you can listen to others’ songs and learn from them. Moreover, you can also see notes and lyrics for the songs.

We are working on an iOS version of SurSadhak, and it is now available as an early access version with a limited set of features. Apart from that, we are also developing a Web version of SurSadhak where you can access songs published by others without using the app. SurSadhak is in active development and we are excited about its roadmap. Stay tuned for updates!
